It is vital for any modern business to have an online Internet presence, in short, a website. Email, websites and E-commerce are all essential parts of modern business practice. You need a high-performing reliable web host to achieve these ends.

A good Web Hosting company should be dedicated to providing to you up-to-date services reflecting the rapid changes in technology, to help you to gain that edge over your competitors.

Look carefully at our Web hosting plans and select one to fit your specific needs. For example, the allocation of disk space, the amount of web traffic you anticipate, the number of email addresses you might need, and of course, the price – these are all factors to be taken into consideration. For the advanced website, more expensive options might be necessary or desirable, such as secure transactions and multiple databases.

It is important to us to make sure your site is up and running and continues to do so reliably. Speed can be almost as important as reliability when it comes to connections. You will find worldSoft Web Hosting offers state of the art services. We are sure you will certainly find us to be one if not the best value in hosting. You and your web-based business can depend on our fast, reliable quality service.

How are Windows and UNIX/Linux hosting different from each other?

Web hosting is provided by most hosting companies based on UNIX related platforms, (e.g. Linux or FreeBSD). However, others offer Windows hosting based on Microsoft's Windows operating system. Your choice will ultimately be decided by what technologies, languages or gadgets you will be using on your site/s.

If you need ASP, ASP.NET, Perl, PHP and MySQL, or Microsoft SQL Server your best choice would be Windows operating system.

I've seen some Hosting Companies offering Unlimited bandwidth or disk space. How can they do this?

Good question. The answer is – watch the small print! Unlimited resources may be offered, but obviously there must be limits, sometimes down to the judgment of a sysadmin techie. Be careful of the hidden limits they may enforce, as your site could without warning be dropped from their servers! We do offer unlimited bandwidth without any "surprise or hidden fine print". You will not be charged for this feature if you host with us!

What is a web host?

A Web Hosting Company is one which majors on “renting out” space on the web to people who want a website. By typing your domain name, surfers will then be able to access your site, once you have obtained “hosting” and uploaded your site. A good Host will offer many useful features to support their customers in building their websites and maintaining them, for example web-based control panels, databases for advanced use, and web and FTP access 24/7, along with easily accessible support from the technical department. For example, an extraordinary all-in package is available from worldSoft Web Hosting. Free setup, Free templates, unlimited emails, PHP, mySQL, CGI, FrontPage. From $3.95/month.

How do I put my site onto the web ?

You can upload your site to the internet using an FTP program or control panel like the one used at worldsoft Web Hosting. You normally upload your .html pages to a directory or folder called something like /www. Your homepage should be named index.html, index.htm, index.shtml, index.php etc although default.htm, etc can also be used. The webserver will automatically send the file at path /www/index.html when a browser specifies http://www.yourdomain.com where yourdomain.com is your registered domain name. When your account is set up our Hosting company, we will set up a default.html file on your domain with a reference on it that the site is hosted by us. It may say that your site is being constructed and your content wll be available soon. If your own index.html (homepage is ready, upload it to replace the our page. If you are using a different extension than .html, delete the page and upload yours using FTP.

What is meant by “propagate”?

First you purchase and register your domain name. Then you tell InterNIC which domain name servers (DNS) you wish to use to serve your site to the web. The DNS will be that of the hosting company. Then it may take a little while (one to three days) before you can upload your site to the domain. During that time your DNS entries are propagating, and this means that ISPs (Internet Service Providers) around the world are updating their records to include your domain. It is the same process whatever host you use.

What distinguishes a website from an E-Commerce Website?

A website gives information about you, whatever subjects you choose, your business and possibly your product. An example would be a website advertising your high street shop – it may tell potential customers how to find your shop, what you sell, etc. It may tell your customers off-line options of how to buy your product/s. For example by phoning you or visiting your shop. It will have limited security features and be similar to a printed brochure about your business.

If you want to be able to sell online, an E-Commerce website ( such as http://www.newberrysbakery.com ) is an extension of the basic website. It provides all of the required info while providing high-level security features by encrypting data, security in data transfer over secure servers, real-time sales online including order processing, order fulfilment and inventory control. It enables you to safely process credit card payments over the internet and to take orders online.

IP Address? What does that mean?

Every computer or website which is connected to the Internet has in IP address. IP stands for Internet Protocol. It looks like a set of numbers separated by dots. Not very memorable, so domain names are a more user-friendly representation of the IP address. When you use a browser to access an address (ie. Type in a domain name) it will eventually be translated itno the IP representation (a set of numbers).

I've heard of Email Autoresponders. What are they?

If you anticipate dealing with lots of email queries, usually generated from your website, you can use an autoresponder to send an automated reply (predetermined by you) to your customers or surfers to your site. An autoresponder sends an instant message when any email is received in your POP account. Popularly used as replies when you're on vacation or holiday, they can also be used for many more sophisticated replies to particular queries received via your site. It can be risky if two autoresponders end up communicating with each other! Go to your Mail Manager in your Control Panel Toolkit, choose your POP and fill in the blanks to write your own automatic response.

What distinguishes email forwarding from an email alias?

These are almost exactly alike. However, you can't forward one email account to another. You are merely setting up an alias, which is not a normal email account, and you cannot check mail in an alias. An alias's only function is to forward all email it receives to a real email account. An email forwarder is a means of sending email to an address other than the one from which it originated.

Can you clarify shared, virtual, dedicated and collocated Web hosting?

Shared hosting is the leasing of a small work space for you to develop and host your website.

Virtual hosting allows the renting of a particular amount of space on a shared Web Server that can act as a server. This would be where other businesses, individuals and sites may also be leasing space.

Dedicated hosting means the leasing of a whole Web Server along with its connection to the Internet.

Colocated hosting is a server you buy and locate at the hosting Data Centre with its own rack space and Internet connection. In this case you would be responsible for machine setup, software installation and sites you like.
